A few years ago, I bought a glass jelly mould.
“We should make some jelly” I announced on bringing it home.
I cleaned it up, put it on a shelf and promptly forgot all about it.
Same goes with the second jelly mould I found.
Then a few weekends back, I found a bumper stash.
One from a car boot sale, one from a charity shop,
two from a market. All on the same day. (Strange huh?)
The universe was telling me to make jelly!
(If I wasn’t getting enough hints
from our kitchen wallpaper!)
********
Except the jelly book we read said that
making it in a glass jelly mould is hard.
(Doomed to fail even!)
Oh-oh…
Never ones to listen to what might be sensible advice,
on Sunday we stopped off to get a whole lot of fruit,
some sugar and some veggie gelatin and got to work…
********
Now, I was fully expected to be sharing
a catastrophic jelly failure here…
but they turned out brilliantly.
(Yup, beginner’s luck really!)
********
Here’s how we made them:
Make 300 ml of fruit juice:
4 medium sized oranges, chopped and juiced.
1 lemon, chopped and juiced.
Add to 100 ml sugar syrup
(100ml water plus 100g sugar)
Add to 100ml to make 500ml of liquid in total.
Then add two sachets of veggie gelatine.
Boil it all up. Pour into moulds.
(To ensure the jelly came out, we lightly greased
the moulds with a tiny bit of butter.)
And voila, vintage veggie jelly!
And the important bit? How did they taste?
Really yummy, fruity and slightly tart.
Just right with a little spot of ice-cream.
********
So now that we’ve cracked fruit…
We’re thinking a Gin & Tonic jelly?
With little bits of cucumber through it?
Any other suggestions?
(Except vodka jelly. I had too much as a student
and the idea of it gives me the shudders now!)
Loving the moulds! I would use them as ornaments, they’re that pretty! How about doing champagne jelly?!
Oooh, that sounds rather cool Abbi… maybe like a Kir Royale jelly? 🙂
It is a highly aesthetically pleasing jelly too!
Lauren recently posted..Adventures In Wedding Planning: &The Winner Is … (drumroll please)…
It has a highly pleasing wobble too Lauren… we did a little of bit of filming before we ate one, just to record how ‘sexy’ a wibble it had! 😉
Wow that looks absolutely amazing. I have the same bird jug as you, I found it in a charity shop last week and was going to put it in my etsy shop but I can’t bear to part with it! I love your blog by the way. I am new to blogging and have just been reading back through your blog and its fab, I love your house posts. We have just finished work on our new house which was a complete wreck when we moved in! Keep it up! x

Ah, we’re jug twin Kate! 😉 Yeah, I can’t imagine ever being able to sell mine (would need to start a shop first of course!) And thanks on the home posts… keep meaning to do a before/after one but haven’t got round to it yet!
gin and tonic jelly? That sounds amazing! The next time we have a party I’m going to give that a go!
I remember vodka jelly as a student–my friend put so much vodka in it wouldn’t set despite her putting it in the freezer for ages to quicken up the process.
They look amazing!

Ha ha, yes! Been there done that… we made loads of vodka jelly back then and I think about 50% didn’t set (which didn’t stop us from consuming it of course!). Also used to make alcoholic slush puppies… and alcoholic haribo! *shudder* 😉
Oooh you’ve inspired me to pull out my vintage moulds and get my jelly on. Love your veggie recipe! xx

Oh we are big jelly fans here – yet it’s something I never make! I love the sound of Gin and tonic – cucumber sorbet is my most favourite thing so would think it would taste good in a jelly as well.. Ohh now I want to try.. I’ve had pimms jelly before..
Also Champagne jelly is amazing – my auntie makes it for me every christmas.. love it! And alder flower jelliss yum to – just a little too flowery on its own!
I always wondered wether those vintage moulds were any good! Look amazing!
This looks so gorgeous! I never thought of using veggie gelatine to make jelly either (which is daft of me, as it’s so obvious!). I’d love to try a raspberry jelly but mix in real (whole) raspberries! x

I’m trying to resist the obvious pun…but I can’t: jelly good…. Looks jelly delicious… OK, I’ll stop now. But it does look great . I’m not a fan of packet jelly, but this recipe looks tasty, tangy and picture-perfect.
Ha ha, brilliant Rosalind… I’m disappointed I didn’t think of that! 😉 You know I’d have used it in the post. Yeah, using homemade juice makes the jelly so much nicer (and I’m presuming healthier too!) x
That both sounds and looks better than any other jelly I’ve ever had in my life – may even be moved to make some in my own vintage jelly moulds. T’is the year to try new things – or even just old but better things!

I love this!!
And I have some tiny Hello Kitty moulds that came with packet of Make at Home Hello Kitty Creme Caramel (bought in Hong Kong… If ONLY I could find it here…). I’m making some boozy jelly as soon as I get home!
xx
How fun! I’d love to throw a jelly party. That would be absolutely awesome!

That looks so yummy and the moulds look fantastic!!! Sadly the only jelly I can think about is the one with vodka so I’m not much help ^^
xx
Wow looks delicious! I’m really impressed, and very pretty jelly moulds too xx

they look fantastic! i love jelly and have tried making veggie ones in the past but they usually turn out dissapointingly runny, what brand of gelatine did you use? i might have to give it another go using your recipe! ooh how about a pina colada jelly? x
whimsycate recently posted..secret hen party
We used Dr Oetker’s Vege Gel and it definitely wasn’t runny. The leftover jellies (which I’m having for pudding tonight!) are still all firm but wibbly 😉 And oooh to a pina colada one… that’s going on the list! x
thanks for the name of the gelatine, i’ll be sure to look it for it! x
I love Jelly, thanks for the recipe!

Gin and elderflower.
Ooh, I wonder if you could use vintage teacups as jelly cups for a party?

Gin and Elderflower sounds incredible!
Also… Zoe… how about the recipe for those alcoholic Haribo? 😉

It looks so good, I love that it’s so rich and opaque. Must be the real fruit juice I guess. I really want to try this, just got to find myself a mould now – though I’m sure I had one, I can’t think where it is!

There’s something ever so comforting about vintage jelly moulds! You managed to get a cracking colour scheme going! Most impressive!
I’ve been meaning to do a post about all my jelly moulds for ages… I had to start giving them away. I made a vege prosecco berry rabbit-shaped jelly at new years eve. I love them. Very jealous of your wallpaper…x
I made an elderflower martini jelly recently which worked a treat: http://www.domesticsluttery.com/2011/11/cocktail-hour-elderflower-martini-jelly.html
But I’d be wary of making a booze jelly in something you have to turn out – it’s quite a loose set so I’d probably up the gelatin a little from normal jellies.
Still, it’s really, really tasty. Maybe you could line the ‘bottom’ of the jelly mould with cucumber slices so when you turned it out there was a lovely pattern on top. Would work very well if you made it with cucumber water as well!
I want jelly now.
Wow, I actually feel like I’m 5 again and about to tuck in to jelly and ice cream in a paper bowl. Very cute and very cool!
Jolly well done. I tried (suspecting I would fail) to make milk jelly in one of my old ceramic moulds. That jelly wouldn’t have come out even if I’d sent in troops. I’ll try it again one day and send in the butter. Thanks for the tip 🙂
You’re welcome Lisa 🙂 But oh dear on your milk jelly, how frustrating that must have been! x
