It’s been a bit of a Manic Monday…
so I thought it was time to go all 80s on you!
Of all the thrifty finds I have acquired over the years,
the most surprising is my collection of 80s record singles.
After my parents split up, I became the ‘trustee’ of this vinyl.
Which essentially meant I put it in a box
and then put that box in the hall cupboard.
Then when we moved to our current home,
someone gave us an old record player…
and so a little 80s music discovery began.
What we found was around 100 record singles…
Mostly what was in the charts at the time. (I think.)
We are both children of the 80s
but some songs we knew,
and some we really didn’t.
Like, who the heck are Five Star?
My other half promises me that they were huge
and the UK equivalent of the Jacksons.
Still nothing…
Other ones… I’ve looked at blankly,
could have sworn that I’d never heard
of the song before… and then the minute
it’s on the turntable… instant recognition!
Yup, I would have said I didn’t know
I Want Your Love by Transvision Vamp
but I appear to know all the words!
{Check out those a-ha cheekbones!}
One of the surprises is how involved it is
to play some record singles…
You have to pull a record from its sleeve,
place it carefully onto the turntable,
gently put the needle at the start…
(and try not to just pull it across the record!)
The strange scratchy hissy nothingness noise
before the song starts is really rather enchanting…
so different from how my Spotify playlist sounds!
So how you all? How’s your 80s tune trivia?
(I think I’d be good for a pub quiz now!)
Anyone know all the songs pictured?
Maybe I should make a Spotify list
of all these songs to share?

{Update:} Ok, so here it is…
Zoë’s 80s awesome-tastic playlist.
It’s got all of the record collection I could find.
(Strangely Kylie’s Locomotion isn’t there!)
** Enjoy 80s fans! **
like, du-huuuh system-addict? I LOVED 5 star. Such awesome shoulder pads too
@lulalovestea totally feel like I missed out on them… my best friend said she absolutely loved them too!
You should play it! Aargh, feel old, I know all the records on our blog! (I was very advanced at primary school!)
you and your husband should dj an 80’s night! Or at the very least a 80’s popstar party! I’d come 🙂
Five Star is my best friend’s favourite band. We met in nursery, and I’ve seen him dance to Systematic like 158 times
Definitely make a Spotify playlist!
Of course! Thanks to their infamous appearance on Going Live
@FiascoMac infamous? how? (definitely missing out here!)
No way! I remember this day like it was yesterday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bfKredivMU
Jealous doesnt describe it! I wish i had kept my collection from what feels like a million years ago! I loved and I mean loved Bananarama. I also have to agree with your husband, you don’t remember five star?! thank you for a glimpse of the past!

I was born in 91, but I’d still say I have an abnormally good knowledge of 80s/ early 90s singles… Although clearly not as good as I thought after seeing these records!
My chums and I also have a special dance for INXS I need you tonight, which isn’t cool at all, and something I probably shouldn’t tell people.
Abigail, I would love to see that dance! Me and my cousin had one for Michael Jackson’s Thriller when we were wee (but she doesn’t remember it now so we can’t do it as adults!)
Oh, I remember 5 Star! And that Rick Astley single. And She Drives Me Crazy was in the charts the whole time I was reading The Hobbit so I always associate them now! And… yeah… this is pretty much my pre-teens in music…

Hey Zoe- I am feeling old, old, old reading this. I was born in 74 so like remember all of these tho my tastes evolved into a little darker gothy stuff! Still good to see all these lovely singles together. My other half has a huge box of 80’s singles too- they used to make for a good party turn, everyone picked a few. Well it was fun at the time! Great post, Jo x

this cracked me up. i was a massive 5 star fan! i’m more a child of the mid 70s – mid 80s i guess. and yes i reckon i could sing every one of those singles, that’s my childhood right there! x

That’s my childhood in singles! I think I know all of them! Ha, the Pasadenas – I’d forgotten about them! I was never a Five Star fan though…..obvs you weren’t either!! Did you get Number 1 magazine? I was a big fan! You have some classics there m’dear! 🙂 x
Yeah the Pasadenas were another one I didn’t recognise until I started playing them! Think I went straight from Twinkle to a ‘grown up’ girl’s mag that I can’t remember the name of… so no Number 1 magazine. (There’s actually a Scottish equivalent of OK magazine called that now!) x
Has anyone heard of Five Star? OF COURSE! System a-addict… 🙂
I just love my record collection. Yours is amazing!

loved reading your post this morning – i remember them all very well 🙂 if you’d like to progress your 7 inch collection a little i have a large collection of pop and dance 12 inch classics sitting in my mum’s cellar. she is moving and i am trying to find a loving home for them. (no room in my apartment sadly). let me know if you are interested. becky
becky, I’m sure I could help you find a home for them… even if I don’t have enough room, there’s bound to be a record lover out there who’d appreciated them x
Yes, I think I know them all! Here’s another 80s pop factoid to add to your pub quiz knowledge: did you know that prince wrote Manic Monday?
I so did not know that! (I’m way less ready for that pub quiz than I think I am!!) Love it Eleni! 🙂
You have a high quality collection there! Can’t believe you didn’t know who Five Star were, my friend knew all their dances off by heart, bet they are on You Tube. And as for Morton Harket, yum!

I love the holder, its so neat! Thomas just bought home some 80’s bon jovi, madonna and ABC records last week haha, I love 80’s records. Did you see the post I did ages ago about thomas’s record collection? Its got a bit ridiculous now really…

I know them all, I’m afraid. Guess that shows my age… It doesn’t even feel that long ago!
I love Transvision Vamp and know Fivestar existed and that they were the equivalent of the Jacksons but know none of their songs. Not a one. In the 80s in our house it was a lot of Kyile and Jason, Erasure and the Smiths, The Cult, Jesus and Mary Chain (I have older siblings)

I do believe I DO know all the songs pictured! Is that a boast or a shameful admission? I’m not sure. What’s important is that I’m now humming Transvision Vamp ‘I Want Your Love’ and getting it mixed up and mingle in with ‘Baby I Don’t Care’ while resisting the urge to slather matte pastel pink lipstick all over my mouth 😉 Amazing.
I recognise most of these records and probably dressed like most of the people in them – only in the BAD (in the sense of Not Good) West Coast of Scotland stylee. Get them on spotify!

Wowsers… red face… (I think I actually had a crush on Rick Astley!!??) and then again I think I wanted to marry all of A-ha and then again I think I thought I WAS the girl from Transvision Vamp…. thanks for the memories!! (I think?)
oh my goodness…your post has made my week!!! total whizz back to my childhood and yes i knew every single single 😉 and all refreshed too as i went to an 80s party at the weekend. we dressed up. i went with a bananarama/molly ringwald vibe and danced my heart out to all the classics. i remember when my friend bought the black box single at school…my mum loved huey lewis and the news (and go west…ha!) morten and co are just beauties aren’t they? xxx ps i gave you a sunshine award on my blog via seventy tree…and a few q+a for you if you’d like to join in 🙂
aww, that sounds ace Kelly! hope you took lot of pictures (and ate lots of pop tarts!) 😉 thank you so much for the sunshine award too – very nice of you! x

80s music reminds me of my parents and their friends–remember seeing my mums record collection and thinking you listened to these but they are massive but I loved the colours of the coloured vinyl.

Love that record holder thingy. We need something just like that!! x
OMG, System Addict by Five Star is immense, I’m going to go listen to it now, I was born in 1986 but I swear the majority of my iPod is music from the 80’s backwards, mainly the 50’s and 60’s but the 80’s are fun to listen to!!

Love the spotify list- fab Zoe! Jx

I love the ’80s! People often make fun of them but it was a good decade, lots of bright colours and cheerful songs 🙂
