Back in January, the lovely Claire from Miso Funky
told me about the best ever charity shop. “You’ll love it.”
And boy was she right… it’s a cute wee place in Govan,
with gorgeous finds at old school charity shop prices.
My favourite find was the 50s coffee pot above.
Which I can’t decide whether to use for coffee
or turn into a pretty little vase for flowers.
Next up… this gorgeous little 50s gravy boat.
I’m thinking I might plant something in it.
An orangey flower perhaps?
{That said, it looks pretty cute just sitting
next to my new Hello Jenuine postcard.}
Since July last year when I found my first Meakin teapot,
we’ve become a bit obsessed with the 60s make.
And here in this charity shop was another little set.
Complete with a milk jug and bowl.
I was torn between this set and a pretty pinky gold set
I’d spotted. “I’ll get this then” said the other half.
{Yes, he’s a definite keeper than one.}
Does this remind anyone else of an owl?
I keep seeing this pic as two eyes looking at me!
New Meakin meets old Meakin.
Or boy’s Meakin meets girl’s Meakin!
And a lemon squeezer… which is hopefully
going to assist me on my soon-to-start health-kick.
This is the china that caught my eye.
It’s been a while since I saw anything so pretty
or so affordable in a charity shop it has to be said.
Gin in a tea cup anyone?
Last April I blogged about my vintage china obsession.
It made some sense when I was collecting more for our wedding.
And after our wedding, a couple of people borrowed
my china for their own wedding… which was pretty cool.
So I’ve been thinking if anyone has a wedding or event
they’d like to borrow some for… then drop me a line.
Instead of payment, I was thinking it would be
good to donate to my Nana’s charity, Marie Curie.
Since she’s the one who inspired my love of tea.
Oh yes, and the set also came with another milk jug…
which I can add to my little growing collection.
{I have no idea why I’m so fond of milk jugs but I am!}
After leaving the lovely charity shop laid down
with all these things, we headed to the West End.
Where I picked up this cute coral cardi…
which I have now washed twice and
still haven’t got rid of the ‘vintage smell’.
Any tips on how to do that?
*******
And the one that got away?
Behold the Holiday Flask in the Holiday picnic hamper.
I found this in a junk shop… and instantly
fell deeply in love with that Holiday logo.
But my wallet was pretty empty by this point.
And the price was far too high anyway.
So I let it go.
(Well, sort of… it’s going on my
things to stalk on ebay list!)
*********
So do you know of still fab charity shop?
Or how to get rid of that vintage aroma?!
Do share if you do.
And if you’re interested in borrowing my china
(and donating to Marie Curie) just drop me an email.
Happy Monday everyone xx
Hi, I am a long time lurker of your blog – I love it and reading about all your charity shop finds! I think that is a really lovely idea that you will hire out your china collection for charity donations. x
Aww thanks Helen 🙂 (Always lovely to hear from a lurker!) And glad you like the idea… been thinking about it for a while but only just got the courage to put it out there! x
I love that coffee jug! You find the best things. And I *love* the idea of a donation to charity when hiring your china – so thoughtful. xo
lovely finds! x
I love chine but can’t collect it as don’t have the space to store it–damn living in a small flat. But one day I am going to have the pretiest tea sets ever and invite people over for afternoon tea so they can see them in their full glory!

There is a fab charity shop near me in Hertfordshire. The first time I went in they had multiple vintage globes, suitcases and pyrex but alas I had no money so I went back a couple of days later and it had all gone. This leads me to believe that i’m not the only one who knows about its greatness. Darn it!

Oh no Katie, that would have made me cry! Darn it indeed!!
Hello, you have a fabulous selection of vintage goodies. I am feeling very inspired to add to my (very small) collection! x

I’ve sort of concocted my own way of getting rid of that musy charity shop smell. Take the garment and lay it on a clean dry towel then liberally sprinkle with good old shake and vac. Roll the garment into the towel like you’re making a roulade and leave for a couple of hours. Then shake off the powder out of the window and voila! I’ve not tried this on knitware yet as the particles might get a bit stuck in the wool.

Oh thanks lauren_alice, that’s certainly worth trying… might try a little bit and see how it works! Good concocting 🙂
ah-the gravy boat wins-or possibly a joint win with the ‘holiday’ flask. Great finds.

Found a brilliant shop nr my mums but drew the line at buying anything! need to create some space first..
that coffee pot is amazing! I have a very similar glass pitcher with etched stars!
really beautiful!
I love Meakin crockery too! I had a lovely casserole dish (with the blue and green flowers- like your cups) until it fell off the drainer one day. I live in hope I’ll find another similar!
Great finds! Good/well priced charity shops are becoming few and far between these days- it’s brilliant when you find a gem!
Some really lovely finds here – wish I lived nearer to that charity shop!

I just found that exact same Meakin set in a charity shop here but I absolutely do not have anywhere to put/display/store it so I had to walk away. *sob*
China hire for charity is a wonderful idea!

Oh Sarah, that’s so sad! You need to get one of those storage places… or squish stuff under the couch for a later date perhaps? 😉
Wash your cute new top with white vinegar to rid it of the smell. Cheers!
Thanks Marria! 🙂 Bought some white vinegar yesterday so going to try it out tonight. Fingers crossed x

Awesome and lovely charity shop finds…thanks for sharing such a gem! I rarely find anything I like in them anymore but it’s good to know that bargains do still exist! xx
You could try ACE bleach although not sure if it’s okay to use on wool/colour . Love the pretty china. 🙂
Please use the coffee pot for coffee sometimes. I am ok with things being used for a variety of things, but I like the thought that when we buy something old, we continue it’s purpose. 🙂
The pink cup and saucer is the prettiest thing ever. Also, I have 6 milk jugs!

Lovely post and you’ve got to love Govan! 😉 x
Is it possible to have jug envy (of the ceramic kind) – I think I do! I have been collecting vintage teacups for years but have been trying to hold back recently as I have tonnes just sitting in the cupboard. Sigh. Perhaps I can collect vicariously through you!

What great finds! This must be a small, independent charity shop – the big ones (PDSA etc) have got £ per square ft/m to bring in to justify their wage bills, rent, rates etc – so their prices are higher than new-buy from cheapie new shops 🙁 Pity the hamper got away it’s gorge!
Alison Cross recently posted..Hestia….tells a yellow tale
Yeah, it’s an indie one Alison… run by people who are determined to charge reasonable prices for nice things. (The woman there told me she doesn’t believe in ‘vintage’. She was also saying that the old women who drop off things, like old china, want it to go to people who’ll look after it and cherish it.) I agree that it seems sad when you can buy something cheaper for new as it does put you off really. x

What a super lovely thing to do with your china collection. I only wish I had an ‘event’ coming up now!
I dont know if I am going to show my age here but I used to hate charity shops, I used to think that they were disgusting but now I love to spend hours looking round inside of them
Poppy recently posted..Software to watch TV online
I wasn’t a huge fan when I was little… my Nana used to say charity shops were for ‘tinks’! and that sort of stuck with me until I went to uni! I think in a small town there was obviously a stigma about having to shop there, as opposed to wanting to shop there. Funny how things change x
I adore charity shops too- they’re like mini goldmines. LOVE all of your 70s pieces, so pretty!! Love that cardigan too- looks so soft and the colour is stunning!
My latest post is about how to take care of vintage clothes 😀

I’ve found that Borax substitute works really well at getting that musty smell out of vintage clothes. Borax is a fungicide that safe to use around the home and that musty smell is mould so it needs killing and won’t wash out. It’s available online, I got some on Ebay very cheaply. Just put a generous amount in with your washing powder, either machine wash or hand wash depending on how delicate it is, and line dry if possible. Tah dah! Lovely fresh smelling vintage cardi.
Thanks Kelly. Someone had mentioned Borax substitute to me recently (in a charity shop!) but I had no idea what they were talking about… and then just had the word Borat stuck in my head (useless!). Will def check that out, thanks xx
Amazing charity shop finds! But the link to the shop doesn’t work. Where is it? xx
